Animal Testing
The L’OCCITANE Group has opposed animal testing for over 40 years, and we have never tested our products, active ingredients, or raw materials on animals at any stage of the product development or manufacturing process. The Group is fundamentally against animal testing of beauty products globally. In China, where our products are sold, local authorities require that some cosmetic products be tested. They believe this is the best way to ensure consumer safety.
We do not conduct these tests; they are performed by Chinese laboratories approved by local authorities on a limited animal panel.
To advance this issue, the cosmetics industry is working to improve its relationship with Chinese authorities, with the clear goal of ending animal testing for beauty products. The industry has engaged with relevant authorities and animal rights NGOs to promote alternative techniques used in Europe, where animal testing has been banned.
This constructive dialogue has led to significant advances in Chinese regulations, including a decision in June 2014 to end testing on "ordinary cosmetics" manufactured and packaged locally (e.g., shampoo, perfume). Another major milestone was achieved in November 2016 when the CFDA (China Food and Drug Administration) approved non-animal tests for the safety assessment of certain cosmetic ingredients. Currently, the NIFDC (National Institute for Food and Drug Control) is considering acceptance of additional alternatives to animal testing (AAT).
To further demonstrate our commitment to ending animal testing, the L’OCCITANE Group has partnered with the Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS), which has an active program in China promoting the use and regulatory acceptance of AAT. More information about this program can be found on the IIVS website.
We believe that this open dialogue with Chinese organizations will positively influence Chinese regulations and ultimately end animal testing.
Thank you for your interest, and we hope this statement clarifies our position.
